Yet another school shooting hit the airwaves just recently --- this time at the Umpqua Community college in Oregon --- and President Barack Obama is furious.
The visibly frustrated president said on Thursday evening that this has become a "routine" and that it's time to take action.
According to the Washington Post, Obama has often rallied against the refusal of the Congress in passing additional gun control measures and on Thursday, his remarks on the issue ranged from anger to incredulity.
"There's been another mass shooting in America--this time, in a community college in Oregon. That means there's another community stunned with grief, and communities across the country are forced to relive their own anguish, and parents across the country who are scared because they know it might have been their families and their children," the president declared.
"As I said just a few months ago and I said a few months before that, and I said each time we see one of these mass shootings, our thoughts and prayers are not enough. It's not enough," he went on.
He reiterated points about gun violence, regulation of using deadly weapons and freedom. He also bemoaned how tragedies no longer shock the public and how media reports them. He even urged media outlets to list the number of Americans who die each year from guns to show just how much of a threat it is to the US. President Obama also looked incredulous as the prospect as he said, "Somehow this has become routine," he said, looking a bit incredulous at the prospect. "The reporting is routine. My response here at this podium ends up being routine."
In this latest speech, the president was bemoaning the Umpqua Community College shooting, where a 26-year-old man went on a rampage.
According to The New York Times, Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin said that the shooting left 10 people dead and seven wounded (although a separate report from CNN noted that there were over 20 wounded, although it isn't sure why the hospital claims conflicted with numbers given by Hanlin. It was also noted that the gunman specifically targeted Christians in the school.
The gunman, who Hanlin refused to name so as not to glorify horrific actions, died in an exchange of gunfire with police officers.
Keeping the numbers and victims in mind, do you think President Obama is right about this type of violence becoming "routine" in the US? What are your views about gun safety laws?
