Russia's attack on Syria has been all over the news, but in a report by Yahoo! News, it seems that the Russian airstrikes in Syria appeared to have targeted those areas that did not include Islamic State Fighters, a development that according to Secretary of State John Kerry said is cause of "grave concern" for the US.

While he said that the US will not object to Russia's desire to obliterate the Islamic State or Al-Qaeda targets, he noted that airstrikes may be worrisome. Kerry spoke with Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov regarding "concerns abut the nature of the targets, the type of targets, and the need for clarity with respect for them."

"It is one thing obviously to be targeting ISIL. We are concerned obviously if that is not what is happening," Kerry said.

Defense Secretary Ash Carter also said of the airstrikes, "It does appear they were in in areas where there probably were not ISIL forces. The result of this kind of action will inevitably simply be to inflame the civil war in Syria." He also said that this approach to the Syrian war is tantamount to "pouring gasoline over fire."

"I have been dealing with them for a long time. And this is not the kind of behavior that we should expect professionally from the Russian military," Carter said at a news conference at the Pentagon.

However, despite the harsh words, Carter couldn't confirm reports of Russia's strike hitting civilians, saying that "if it occurred, it's yet another reason why this kind of Russian action can and will backfire very badly on Russia."

BBC News reported that the Russian Defense officials said their aircraft already carried out about 20 missions against he Islamic State group, but this does not stop the US from fearing that the non-IS opponents of Russia's ally, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad were included in the strikes. Meanwhile, the US us targeting air strikes in Syria and Iraq.

Some news outlets like the New York Times and Wall Street Journal already reported that the Russian strikes targeted rebels backed by the US, some of which, they say, included the CIA.

However, in an analysis by BBC North America Editor Jon Sopel there is confusion whether the Russians are trying to destroy ISIS or if they are aiming to prop up President Assad. If it's the latter, that would mean that rebel groups of any kind who oppose the President will be targeted. If that is the case, at some point, Russians might start hitting US-backed groups, and results will not be pretty.

What do you think of this air strike from Russia?
