The robots vs aliens film by director Guillermo Del Toro is not looking so well. "Pacific Rim" was a blockbuster success, but fans will have to wait a bit longer for the sequel to arrive on the big screen because Universal Studios just confirmed that they're going to have to delay the film a bit.

In a statement via Entertainment Weekly, the studio said that they want the film to "be the vanguard, fully-immersive experience that the franchise deserves. To this end, the decision was made to delay the production and release of Pacific Rim so that the creative team can continue in its efforts to exceed the amazing experience of the first film."

Game Spot reported that earlier this month, "Pacific Rim 2" may be canceled despite its predecessor's commercial success. However, Director Guillermo Del Toro refuted the rumors in an interview with Variety by revealing that they are still working on the screenplay and budget. "As far as I'm concerned, it's not gone. We're still on it," he added.

Jon Jashni, president and chief creative officer of Legendary, also said the same thing, telling Variety that Del Toro will bring his best for the film. Jashni said about Del Toro and the film, "[Del Toro] engenders a sense of family, and he's a great leader. You can be a visionary, but if you're not a leader, that vision isn't always realized. The movie continues to be in development, and we're still working on it with him."

The original "Pacific Rim" film was released in 2013, starring Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, and Ron Perlman, about humanity's war with colossal monsters called "Kaiju", which emerge from a portal at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. To combat these monsters, humans created the Jaegers, which are super robots controlled by two humans who are connected to the machines through a neural bridge. Inquisitr reported that the original film was made with a $190 million budget, finding success in the box office with a $411 million gross.

However, despite the success of the film, it seems that Universal deems "Pitch Perfect 3" a better investment. Forbes pointed out that in terms of budget-to-gross rations as well as potential and actual performance, the Bellas have already proved their money-making future while the company is yet to discover that for "Pacific Rim".

With that in mind, the sci-fi action film starring Idris Elba will no longer be released on August 2017. Instead, the date will go to "Pitch Perfect 3", which the studio moved back a couple of weeks to fill the blank schedule. ComingSoon.net reported that on that date, the a capella movie is the only major release, and will still see the return of Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson.
