Apple's OS X 10.11 El Capitan is now available to download for free at the Mac app Store. According to Tech Radar, the new OS is compatible with any Mac that was able to run the previous version, OS X 10.10 Yosemite. To download El Capitan, simply go to the Mac App Store and select the "Updates" tab.

However, there is one requirement for El Capitan. Users must be running Snow Leopard or better on their Macs in order to upgrade. Tech Radar explains that the Mac operating systems prior to Snow Leopard do not have the Mac App Store required to download the OS X 10.11.

Listed below are some of the best features Apple improved on and added with El Capitan.

#1: Split Screen and Spaces

Macs have always been easy to handle when running multiple apps, however only one app could be viewed at a time. Apple has finally introduced the Split View feature with El Capitan, which allows users to view more than one app simultaneously. To use Split View, just press and hold the green button seen on the top left corner of an app window, instructs CBC News.

Apple has gone a bit further with its new Split View feature by introducing Spaces, a feature which allows users to spread their apps into separate groups. Each Space can be dedicated to a certain task, whether it be work or just goofing around. To switch between Spaces, just swipe three fingers on the touchpad.

#2: Improvements to Spotlight

According to Field Guide, Spotlight can now read natural language searches, like "paper for science class." This new improvement makes it easier to find information on certain topics or simply to go through your files.

9to5 notes that Apple has also added to Spotlight's informational data. Users can now search for information like the weather, sports scores, or even online videos. Furthermore, users can now change the position and size of the Spotlight box.

#3: Enhancements to Safari

Mac users might not need to download Google Chrome anymore with the enhanced Safari features. Apple has made their own web browser much more user friendly with the ability to Pin and mute tabs.

To pin a website, simply drag it to the left-hand side. Pinned tabs will stay open, refresh in the background, and keep your place as long as the browser is open.

Even more useful is the option to mute all the audio playing on Safari, without having to turn off the sound on the computer. To mute a tab, just click on the speaker icon seen at the end of each open tab.
