It has been nearly a year since Helena Bonham Carter and Tim Burton broke the hearts of their fans all over the world when they announced their divorce. But after months of silence, the "Alice in Wonderland" actress finally opened up about the high-profile Hollywood split.

Speaking with Red magazine, Bonham Carter admitted that they still have something special, but that their romance is no guarantee to put them on the road to forever. "I could write a thesis on what's happened and it is all-absorbing when a relationship breaks down, but I think we're coming through it, and I think we'll have something very precious still. Our relationship was always somewhat special, and I think it'll always remain special," she shared.

She also said that the mark of a successful relationship doesn't necessarily mean forever and you have to come to terms that your time may be all that is there to it. However, she did admit that their union "was a gift, a massive gift."

And she finally admitted that the adjoining house theory in London's Belsize part is just a myth: they did live together. The adjoining home theory came with interviews over the years. Vanity Fair quoted Bonham Carter saying at some point, "My house looks like something out of Beatrix Potter, but if you go over to his house, you're in a totally different place. He's got slime balls and dead Oompa-Loompas lying around and skeletons and weird alien lights."

As E! News noted, the pair met on the set of Burton's "Planet of the Apes" remake in 2001. Although they've been together 13 years, they never married and on December 23, 2014, they "separated amicably" and are co-parents to their son, Billy, who is now 11 and daughter Nell, age 7.

As for their relationship, Bonham Carter previously admitted on The Guardian that having a personal and professional relationship with him caused some strain. "It's not without its pressures, working with Tim. It worked on Alice. Sweeney was very stressful, very hard on our relationship," the actress said.

"He's a partner in our private life, but when he's directing, he's the boss. And maybe I confuse that," she added.

Speaking of "Alice", Bonham Carter and Burton are working together for the sequel, called "Alice Through The Looking Glass," that is set to be released in 2016. Bonham Carter will be reprising her role as the Red Queen, acting alongside Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway and Mia Wasikowska. Burton is back as a producer.
