"The Simpsons" fans are about to see the last few seasons of the long-running animated series as showrunner Al Jean reveals her thoughts on how long the show would last.
The show's season 27 debuted on Sunday with a bang as controversy plagues the episode which portrays Homer and Marge facing the end of their marriage.
"The Simpsons" executive producer Al Jean explained The Hollywood Reporter on Sunday why TV's longest-running couple would be splitting.
"We were trying to get to the nub of the answer to the marital dilemma. Husbands and wives think differently, husbands and wives have friction -- how do you solve it? When you get down to it, the therapist says it - and our answer is: there is no answer," he stated.
During the interview, Jean also expressed his surprise at how the public reacted at the episode.
"We were aware that we'd done a number of relationship episodes and people would go, 'Oh, not another one!' There are always things that come up in a marriage that I think are worthy of comedy," he explained, adding that their goal was to reveal the reality behind the jokes.
"But the takeaway we wanted was: When you think you've got a handle on it, that's when you're wrong. I would never presume to say I have marriage figured out," he continued.
While the show continues to face controversy amidst its success, Jean still believes that the show might still last as far as the 30th season.
"It's quite possible that we don't have to go through the whole negotiation for 30. I wouldn't be stunned if we stopped at 28, but my bet is on at least 30. But then you'd have to resign them again. If you made me pick one, I'd say the likeliest is ending after 30," he stated.
When asked if he already had an idea as to how "The Simpsons" final season would be like, he said that he wanted it to be "a fulfilling ending" for the audience.
He also recalled the show's end that almost happened in season 23.
"To be honest, there was one point where we thought it might end in season 23, with the Christmas episode, 'Holidays of Future Passed,' (1989) but we didn't end there, so no plans at the moment," he explained, adding that back then, he had an idea of making the season sort of a loop with the first episode appearing in the finale.
But, despite all these statements from the showrunner, a Complex report still sees this as "not a definitive end."
