There is a possibility that Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose may not be able to play during the team's opening game versus the Cleveland Cavaliers on next month because of a left orbital fracture.
Yahoo Sports said Rose sustained the injury during a team practice on Tuesday.
It detailed that he got struck by an elbow on his face and was rushed to Rush University Medical Center where he underwent a series of tests. These tests reportedly revealed that he needed surgery.
There is still no definite news on when he will return after the surgery which will be done on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Chicago Tribune said that players with this kind of injury like this usually miss five to 28 games.
The same report said this is another setback that the guard would need to face after his previous knee injuries.
"I know I'm great," Rose was earlier quoted by the Chicago Tribune.
It was added in the Yahoo Sports report that Rose has been limited to playing 100 games out of the possible 328 due to injuries. For the past season, his average was 17.7 points and 4.9 assists.
In his absence, the team is expected to make use of Kirk Hinrich, Aaron Brooks and E'Twaun Moore.
Aside from his injury, Rose is also dealing with a legal battle after a former girlfriend accusing him of rape.
CNN reported that Rose claimed in court documents filed last week that it was "consensual sex" and denied the rape allegation.
"I feel like I'm on the right track as far as who I want to be at, in my life and the direction I want to go. I just feel like when you're that focused, people try to take you down. I'm very confident that I will be proven innocent," Rose told reporters on Monday.
According to CNN, the case stemmed from an August 2013 incident where an unidentified woman claimed that the Bulls star and two other friends drugged and gang-raped her.
TMZ earlier reported that the alleged victim claimed that during their relationship, Rose pressured her to masturbate in front of him, have sex with his friends and join group sex with a bunch of people she did not know. She reportedly never agreed to do any of these.
In August 2013, however, the female accuser said that the basketball player and his two close friends Ryan Allen and manager Randall Hampton drugged her so they can gang rape her.
"The plaintiff says she escaped the house with a friend, but later that night, Rose and his friends broke into her apartment and gang-raped her while she was incapacitated," added TMZ.
The victim claimed that she could only recall bits of the incident, but she was certain that the three forced her into having sex.
In explaining why it took her two years to file the case, the complainant said she did not want to do it at first because she was "ashamed and embarrassed" and that she was concerned her family would find out.
However, Rose claimed that the act consented and that the woman even invited him and the defendants to her apartment and for "additional group activities," as per CNN.
