The Seattle Mariners are reportedly working on a trade that would give them former Cy Young winner and Tampa Bay Rays ace hurler David Price, a source close to situation reported over the weekend.
The Mariners are apparently not done yet in their pursuit of a title-contending squad. After acquiring slugger Robinson Cano on a lucrative deal, the Mariners are reportedly trying to land another formidable pitcher to further bolster their pitching rotation.
ESPN Baseball insider David Schoenfield, who already predicted Shin-Soo Choo's signing with the Texas Rangers, believed the Mariners will pursue hard to trade for the 2012 American League CY Young Winner.
"The Mariners can't stop with Robinson Cano and two guys coming off injuries. For better or worse, general manager Jack Zduriencik is all in. Cano's best season in a Mariners uniform is likely to be 2014 and not 2016 or 2017, so there is pressure to upgrade the current roster right now," Schoenfield stated in his article.
Price to Mariners?
According to ESPN Baseball, the Mariners will only have a shot at landing Price by surrendering one of the nation's best prospects,Taijuan Walker. However, Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik stressed they have no interest in making deals involving Walker.
"I don't have intentions of trading Taijuan," The Mariners GM said during the winter meetings via ESPN. "You listen to any opportunities that present themselves and you go into discussions with a lot of people. And his name will come up. Why wouldn't it? As do a lot of our guys, quite frankly. But Taijuan is high-profile because he's rated our top prospect."
Still, the Mariners might have no choice but to sell away their future for the opportunity of winning a World Series crown next season. Having a talented hurler like Price, the Mariners instantly would have one of the most fearsome pitching lineups in MLB with him and another Cy Young winner in Felix Hernandez doing damage on the mound.
Price went 10-8 with a 3.33 ERA and 151 strikeouts last season for the Rays, who expressed their intentions of trading their premier hurler in exchange for MLB-ready prospects.
