The Houston Rockets already ended trade talks involving Omer Asik but the team is expected to reconsider its decision if a good offer comes along--and one such offer might come from the Brooklyn Nets.
ESPN reported that the Rockets recently talked with the Brooklyn Nets about a possible trade that would have sent Asik and Jeremy Lin to the Nets. However, talks reportedly ended when the Rockets asked for All-Star point guard Deron Williams in return.
The Nets are not interested in dealing Williams as part of an earlier agreement. Sources said that Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett agreed to be traded to the Nets during the offseason because they were both looking forward to playing alongside Williams.
Trading Williams is highly unlikely, especially now that the 29-year-old point guard is slowly getting into the groove. The nine-year veteran averaged 16.8 points and 12.3 assists in his last four games.
It should be noted that the alleged discussion between the Rockets and the Nets happened before Brook Lopez was ruled out for the rest of the season due to a broken foot.
While there is no imminent trade in sight for the Nets, general manager Billy King hinted that they could make a move if they feel that it will make the team better.
"If there's a deal out there that we feel is going to make us a better team, we'll do it regardless of tax or the future, but we're not going to panic and do a move just to make a move because we feel we have to," King said.
"There's not an imminent move, we're not looking to make any imminent move trade-wise. We've got 14 other guys that can step up, but we'll continue to discuss possibilities if it can make our team better," he added.
Acquiring Asik and Lin could make the Nets better on both ends of the floor depending on who will they give up, but no deal will be agreed upon if the Rockets will continue to ask for Williams in return.
The Rockets' interest in Williams is not surprising since they have been looking for a better point guard to run their offense, especially after Patrick Beverley went down with a fractured hand that will cause him to miss four to six weeks.
