The San Francisco 49ers (10-4) will be looking to clinch a playoff berth in Candlestick Park's last game before the team moves to their new venue, in a rematch from last year's NFC Conference title game against the Atlanta Falcons (4-10) on Monday Night Football.
The 49ers could have clinched a playoff spot with an Arizona Cardinals loss on Sunday but the Cardinals upset the Seattle Seahawks 17-10 on the road, snapping the Seahawks' 14-game home winning streak. The Cardinals win forces San Francisco into a must-win situation tonight if they expect to go to the postseason for the third consecutive year under head coach Jim Harbaugh.
"There will be tremendous memories from everybody that's ever played there," said coach Harbaugh. "That's why it's important for us not to screw it up and make sure we get this win this (Monday)."
The 49ers have returned to the form that propelled them into last year's Super Bowl, with Colin Kaepernick holding a 104.7 passer rating and throwing for seven touchdowns and one turnover in the 49ers current four-game win streak after committing 12 turnovers through the first 10 games of the season.
The Falcons, who will miss the postseason for the first time since 2009 after a season in which the team failed to rebound from injuries that ravaged the squad throughout the season, are looking to ruin the 49ers' holiday season and finish the season on a positive note.
Atlanta won last week, eking out a 27-26 victory over the struggling Washington Redskins, with Falcons QB Matt Ryan throwing for 210 yards, a touchdown and an interception in a game that was decided by Atlanta CB Desmond Trufant, who tipped away Washington's QB Kirk Cousins' pass after Washington went for a two-point conversion and the victory late in the game.
Atlanta did managed to force seven turnovers against Washington and Falcons coach Mike Smith believes a repeat of last week's defensive performance will go a long way in defeating the 49ers.
"The first (point of emphasis) is winning the turnover battle and the second one is winning the explosive battle," said coach Mike Smith. "You put those two things together, and it's the toxic differential that you look at."
