Kanye West cannot catch a break. No matter what he does, no matter what he says, someone has an issue with it. Granted, West’s narcissism can get the best of him, but even his most humane, ordinary comments are over exaggerated and exploited at times. He’s a scapegoat. He’s such a prominent figure in modern culture that he’s often pinned as the root of the problem, or at least a high caliber example of such.
The Anti-Defamation League recently accused West of anti-Semitism after comments he made during a radio interview. West said, “Black people don’t have the same level as connections as Jewish people,” which the Anti-Defamation League dubbed “classic anti-Semitism.”
“There it goes again, the age-old canard that Jews are all-powerful and control the levers of power in the government,” the group said.
But West would not let them have the last word on the matter. He responded to the accusations during an interview with Chicago radio station B96. He pegged the comment as an “ignorant compliment.”
“I don’t know how being told that you have money is an insult,” he said. “That would be like if somebody complimented black guys and said, ‘All black guys have big penises.’ You don’t want to be the black guy who raises his hand and says like, ‘That’s not true. I have proof.’”
Although slightly misguided, West makes a good rebuttal and puts the matter into perspective. But the point is he never deserved the accusation in the first place. There are much more egregious anti-semitic issues to be dealt with, but since West is an easy medium to spread your message to the general public, the Anti-Defamation League chose to take him for a ride.
Regardless, he handled it gracefully with a touch of humor. Well played Kanye.
