Donald Trump may be the top contender for the presidency next year, but as much as Republican Americans love him, he's got a negative rating among the Latino population.
The New York Daily News reported that a Marist/MSNBC/Telemundo poll released on Monday showed that 70% of Latinos have a negative opinion of the real estate scion, who, in his campaign in June, degraded Mexican immigrants by calling them drug dealers and rapists.
"They're bringing drugs, they're bringing crime. They're rapists and some, I assume, are good people, but I speak to border guards and they're telling us what we're getting," Trump said.
However, the same poll showed that Latinos have a positive opinion of the Democratic Party's front-runner, Hillary Clinton.
On a national standpoint, Clinton also leads Trump, 53% to 40% among registered voters nationally, while she stands at 60% to Trump's 22% on the Latino vote.
According to Politico, Trump's low rating is not surprising, considering his prejudice with Latino immigrants. After the media and internet exploded about his racist rants, Trump still stood by his comments, even calling for an immigration plan that will mass deport undocumented immigrants, the revocation of birthright citizenship, as well as the building of a 1,900-mile wall across the US-Mexico border.
It has to be pointed out that the Latino vote is important in the upcoming elections. Vox noted that Hispanics are a very important demographic for the political parties as they are expected to make up more and more of the US population in the next few decades -- they are now already a prominent force in several states.
A political opinion research group called Latino Decisions estimated that a Republican presidential candidate will need over 40% of the Latino votes to win the election. This is the reason the GOP was insistent on reaching out to the Hispanics after their loss in 2012. That being said, Trump's current approval rating is a concern for the GOP party.
Not all Republican candidates were met with unfavorable ratings from Latinos, though. Jeb Bush, for instance, had the highest favorability rating among the GOP candidates with a +11 net score, followed by Marco Rubio with +5, and Carly Fiorina with +3.
On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton has a net favorable rating of +40, followed by Senator Bernie Sanders with +5.
With these numbers in mind, do you think Donald Trump has a solid chance of getting elected as president next year.
