If his performance for "The Theory Of Everything" proved to people that he can act, his role as transgender artist, Lili Elbe for "The Danish Girl" would probably make him more of an icon than he already is. However, the film just made its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival to great reviews Redmayne is not about the number of Oscars that he can win.
In a report by The Independent, when asked about the "buzz" surrounding his performance in the latest drama, the Oscar-winning actor shrugged it of, saying, "As far as I am concerned it has been such a long road to coming out into the world that frankly the fact that people are beginning to see it means everything to us."
Elbe, who was born Einar Wegener, underwent a series of operations in the early 1930s to transform into a woman -- so no, Caitlyn Jenner, you weren't the first to make such a big buzz -- died in 1931 at the age of 38.
Redmayne said about the person he portrayed, "She (Lily) is an icon of the 20th century, she is an extraordinarily courageous and brilliant woman. But also for me it was the love story. It was like this notion that love shouldn't be limited to gender, to sexuality, to race, to anything. It is about these two souls that meet and about Lily's courage to live a life authentic. I found that very inspiring."
The Telegraph UK noted that Redmayne mentioned the cast and crew speaking with transgender people ahead of the film, the actor noting that they have been struck with their kindness.
However, would this research and performance be enough for him to earn another Oscar Award? According to the Los Angeles Times, "The Danish Girl" is similar to Redmayne's award-winning role last year. Like "The Theory of Everything", it is a portrait of a couple who faced immense challenges as the lives they know changed around them.
Considering the buzz about his role in "The Danish Girl" it seems that Redmayne is on his way to becoming the first actor to win a back-to-back Oscar since Tom Hanks over 20 years ago. According to the LA Times, a studio publicist named his main competition to be Michael Fassbender for "Steve Jobs" and Leonardo DiCaprio's for "The Revenant."
Noted by the outlet to be an "impeccable craft", the film seems to be on its way to the Oscars.
"The Danish Girl" will be released in theaters on November 27, 2015.
