Pope Francis is set to visit the U.S. for the first time a few weeks from now. The event is already gaining attention as early as today, even in Hollywood where religion is not exactly celebrated.

"Extra" host Mario Lopez, a deeply devout Catholic, refers to the pontiff as the "biggest star you could get," adding that Pope Francis is a "progressive pope" who has revitalized faith globally with an impressive energy, Fox News Latino reported.

"Catholic or not, he is universally respected," Lopez told the news outlet. "And he's sort of transcended Catholicism and is looked as a spiritual leader. He's a great individual and I think people understand that."

The 41-year-old TV host said that he would definitely want to meet the pope, but only if his busy schedule allows it.

"It's definitely on my bucket list - to hear him speak or get a blessing. A picture would be awesome - a selfie with the pope would be the best ever," Lopez said, as quoted by Fox News Latino.

Lopez said that he and his family always practice strong Catholic morals. They attend church every Sunday and during the occasions he cannot go to mass, he lights up a candle in a church later that day or in the week.

"I think as I've gotten older, I've just tried to build a more spiritual muscle in a business that is very unpredictable. It's nice to have something that is consistent in our life - family and faith is that for me," the former "Saved by the Bell" actor explained to Fox News Latino.

Lopez admitted that a lot of celebrities in Hollywood choose to suppress their religious faiths because it is a taboo and controversial topic, often focusing instead on their careers.

"Unfortunately, politics and faith, religion, are viewed that way because it's a very personal thing and beliefs are pretty strong, and not everyone is going to agree with you," the TV personality said, as reported by Fox News Latino.

Nevertheless, Lopez is proud of being Catholic, especially now that the church is headed by Pope Francis who is "incredibly smart" and has "provoked conversation" and "commanded attention," the news outlet reported.

He continued, "His message is loving people and coming from a place of love. You can't go wrong with that approach. It's pretty powerful."

U.S. President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama will lead the welcoming committee when the pontiff arrives at the Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland, Washington on Sept. 22, NY Daily News reported. Pope Francis will also head to New York and Philadelphia before flying back to the Vatican on Sunday, Sept. 27.
