Colombian authorities announced that they seized over 1 metric ton of cocaine disguised as printer ink on its way to Mexico. The police at Bogota's El Dorado airport were said to be tipped off by Mona, a drug-sniffing Labrador. Mona detected the narcotic in 48 boxes of a 1-ton cargo shipment bound for Mexican state, Sinaloa.
So far, Yahoo! Reported that arrests have not been made yet and police refused to say which airline the cargo was stashed in. However, they did say in a statement on Monday that as soon as the powder tested positive for cocaine, Colombian authorities alerted their Mexican counterparts, which led to the bust of the so-called "black cocaine" at Mexico City's airport, from a flight that departed Bogota just a few hours earlier.
The Wall Street Journal said that it was only recently when authorities had a similar bust for the cocaine that matched the characteristics found by the Colombian police -- the bust occurred just over a week ago, when authorities from the Mexican airport, acting on an anonymous tip, found the drugs camouflaged in 40 sacks of black zinc oxide.
However, it has been reported by the Toronto Sun that Mexican police announced they had no knowledge of the interdiction that happened over the weekend, but that the recent bust is very similar to the one that they caught in Mexico City's airport.
The final weight of the drugs is yet to be determined, Colombian authorities are yet to extract cocaine alkaloid from the toner powder where they were hidden, in order to determine its final weight.
WSJ noted that Colombia is the largest supplier of cocaine to the United States, as many of these narcotics land on the streets in America through drug cartels from Mexico. According to Wikipedia, at some point, Colombia was also the world's largest cocaine producer but has since been replaced by Peru.
There is no update as to which drug cartel this much shipment is going to be attributed to, however, known leader Hernan Alonso Villa (known as "Raton" or "The Mouse") was last reported to still be in Spain. This could mean little, as he reportedly has over 200 people under his command, however, as Independent U.K. noted, he has been in charge of exporting cocaine to the US, Spain, and the Netherlands via routes that his organization controlled, which may or may not include Mexico.
Do you think this is the work of the Mouse?
