Spanish animated film "'Un Gallo con Muchos Huevos" debuted high in U.S. theaters during Labor Day weekend.
Fox News Latino reported that the Pantelion Films project, which translated to "A Rooster With Many Eggs," gained $4.4 million from just 395 locations. The movie came from Mexico's filmmaking brothers, Gabriel and Rodolfo Riva Palacio.
"Un Gallo con Muchos Huevos" had a $5.3 million budget and required a production team consisting of 500 people, Fox News Latino noted. The project is the follow-up to the brothers' first two animated movies: 2006's "Una Película de Huevos" ("A Film About Eggs") and 2009's "Otra Pelicula de Huevos y un Pollo" ("Another Movie About Eggs and a Chicken").
The third installment continues the story of Toto the egg, who has now become a young rooster. It will take on the themes of the first two features, which combined comedy and drama, according to a separate report from Fox News Latino.
The feature films were produced by Huevocartoon Producciones and showcased the voice talents of well-known Mexican artists, such as Angelica Vale, Omar Chaparro, Bruno Bichir, Ninel Conde, and Carlos Espejel, La Prensa wrote. The franchise has gained recognition across Mexico in different mediums, including television, digital media, and ad campaigns.
"Un Gallo Con Muchos Huevos" was a huge success in Mexico and was the first film out of the trilogy to be rewarded an international release, Variety reported. To promote the movie, Pantelion Films focused on Hispanic adults between 25-49 years old and kids 6-11 years of age. The production studio also had drive-time radio ads on Mexican and Spanish contemporary music stations and had its cast appear in supermarkets in regions with huge Latino populations.
Pantelion plans to extend the film to approximately 580 screens next weekend, taking advantage of the potential profits since a huge competition, Sony Pictures Animation's "Hotel Transylvania 2," won't be shown in theaters until late September, Variety wrote.
According to Paul Presburger, Pantelion's chief executive officer, the release of "Un Gallo Con Muchos Huevos" during Labor Day timed great because major studios don't usually release new films in this particular weekend.
Presburger added that combined with its earnings in Mexico, the animated film already proved to be profitable, evidently showing that the studio is capable of targeting the increasing number of Latino moviegoers. A research showed that Hispanics are more likely to watch films in theaters more than any other ethnic group, making them a highly valuable audience.
"These movies come out and they take everybody by surprise," he continued, as quoted by Variety. "But we've been seeding the market and developing the market for five years. We're committed to making culturally relevant films for this audience."
