Daniel Radcliffe has played different roles since the final "Harry Potter" film wrapped up, but with Harry's child recently off to Hogwarts, we can't resist: in this time and place, Hagrid could have told him, "Yer a game developer, Harry."
Staying as far from Hollywood as possible, Radcliffe continues with his slew of indies and this time, it's a film about the development of popular video game "Grand Theft Auto". Radcliffe stars as Sam Houser, the heavily bearded "creative genius behind the most lucrative video game ever."
At least as far as the trailer's narrator is concerned.
Wired reported that the film, called "The Gamechangers" stars Radcliffe and Bill Paxton (Apollo 13) as then-attorney Jack Thompson, who spent his days crusading against what he deemed are games with a lot of objectionable content -- particularly, Rockstar's GTA franchise. Think back in the early 00s -- with video games like GTA taking sex and violence to new heights, it's pretty much a sure thing that not everyone is cheering that on.
The film's treatment of the story looks fairly serious, considering the fact that from 2002 to 2005, the game sent a wave of moral panic, especially in the wake of the "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas". Forbes Magazine noted that despite the film's brevity, the trailer seemed to have successfully raised a couple of questions, for starters -- is Sam Houser really a genius?
The 75-second clip showed glimpses of the courthouse, reckless driving, nightclub shots, and even flashes of newspaper headlines that can be tied to the effects of GTA as mentioned in its early years.
The Los Angeles Times pointed out that like most of the things associated by "Grand Theft Auto", the film is also met with controversy, with Rockstar's parent company, Take-Two Interactive reportedly investigating legal options against BBC, which is producing the film. Incidentally, BBC already stated that the film "has not been authorized by the producers of 'Grand Theft Auto'."
The story will explore the story of a couple of young men making games that's full of sex and violence --- enough to send an outrage to concerned parents and lawmakers, which the film will seemingly focus on. Catch Daniel Radcliffe and Bill Paxton in "The Gamechangers", which will be released by BBC on September 15.
Other than the heavily bearded role, Radcliffe can be seen in his next acting gig as Igor in this fall's "Victor Frankenstein", which will be released in theaters on October 2.
