It was only two years ago when rockers Avril Lavigne and Chad Kroeger tied the knot, and yet they fell victim to this year's slew of celebrity divorces.

In a statement via Instagram, Lavigne wrote, "It is with heavy heart that Chad and I announce our separation today. Through not only the marriage but the music as well, we've created many unforgettable moments. We are still, and forever will be, the best of friends, and will always care deeply for each other. To all our family, friends and fans, thank you sincerely for the support."

The couple first met when he contributed to her album, "Here's To Never Growing Up. The couple got engaged in August 2012 after a month of dating and married in July 2013 in a lavish, gothic-themed ceremony in a castle in the south of France, the bride wearing black.

The split comes as to no surprise, however, as rumors of a tumultuous marriage came last September, when Lavinge celebrated her birthday without Kroeger, just weeks after he gave her a 17-carat emerald cut diamond ring.

This also comes on the heels of medical concerns for the pair, as put by the Los Angeles Times. In April, Lavigne shared about her struggle with Lyme Disease, while Kroeger's group, Nickelback, had to cancel the remainder of their 2015 tour after their frontman had to have a cyst removed from his vocal chords.

According to a source for E! News, however, Lavigne has some time to figure out how to break the news to fans. The insider said, "Honestly, she's doing OK. This has been in the works for awhile."

However, things are not going to have a bitter turn for the couple, as the insider added, "Chad is being supportive," the insider says. "At the end of the day, they just didn't see eye to eye on a lot of things."

Finally, "their friends and their social circles never really mixed. They originally got together to make an album and that's where the spark between them originated. But it just slowly died out."

Although it is not yet clear whether or not the pair will get a divorce, doing so will make this Lavinge's second failed marriage. She was previously married to Sum41 frontman Deryck Whibley for over three years before they decided to end their marriage in October 2009.

Incidentally, the Huffington Post reported that while the "Complicated" singer's marriage ended, Whibley decided it's time to tie the knot with his fiancee, Arianna Cooper, whom he wed in Los Angeles just last Sunday.
