After years-long talks about making the adaptation, Disney is finally pushing through in bringing "Artemis Fowl" to the big screen with the help of "Thor" director Kenneth Branagh.
Fans of the fictional boy genius Artemis Fowl created by author Eoin Colfer are in for a treat as recent reports declare an update on the much-awaited movie-adaptation of the eight-book series.
According to Screen Rant, a word about the adaptation first surfaced back in 2001, a couple of years after the first book was released.
At the time, Miramax films held the rights to make the adaptation which was later transferred to Disney but production had been delayed significantly after writer-director Jim Sheridan decided that the project was not for him.
After Disney took matters into its own hands (as well as that of Robert DeNiro and Jane Rosenthal who acted as executive producers) in 2013, the writing of the script was reported to be written by "Harry Potter" writer Michael Goldenberg.
Back then, according to Screen Rant, it was still unsure whether the original storyline that Colfer himself co-written with Sheridan would be followed.
Now, recent reports from the outlet as well as Variety and Cinema Blend revealed that the Mouse House may found another helmer for the job: Kenneth Branagh.
Branagh, as Cinema Blend described, is a high-profile director who was responsible for the success of Disney and Marvel's Chris Hemsworth-starred "Thor."
According to Variety, Disney is currently in talks with the director in doing the franchise which, if approved, he would be writing alongside Irish playwright Conor McPherson.
While it is still in the early stages, the film adaptation of the boy genius' story seems to be heading towards fulfillment as Variety noted how "signs are pointing [to] the right direction."
These 'signs' may include Branagh being attached to the project not only as a potential director but as a co-producer alongside Harvey Weinstein.
Aside from that, the book received plenty of positive reviews upon its release with each installment adding to the commendation despite being described by Cinema Blend as "a hodgepodge of adult characters in a childish realm."
The book series revolves around the quest of Artemis Fowl II, a 12-year-old brilliant and cunning eponymous criminal mastermind who plots to extract gold from the furtive Fairy People, leading him to encounter many dangerous creatures.
"Over the series, Fowl becomes a sort of antihero rather than a full-fledged villain, often having to work together with the fairies to stop a slew of treacherous megalomaniacs," Variety described the character.
