The 71st annual Golden Globe Awards will honor extraordinary films that are acclaimed for gripping storylines and superb acting. Yet, just as much talent existed on the small screen in 2013 as it did in theaters. A total of five TV movies and miniseries are nominated for a Golden Globe award to honor cinematic excellence on the small screen.

The Golden Globe nominees for Best TV Movie or Miniseries are:

"American Horror Story: Coven"- The cult FX series takes viewers into the darkest depths of human despair, and it's impossible to stop watching. This season, the show is hooking viewers with its witchy drama more than its ick factor, but certain scenes still definitely disturb. The latest season uses the sultry, spooky city of New Orleans as a backdrop for a season that involves a coven for young witches, a voodoo priestess, witch hunters and an undead racist socialite.

"Behind the Candelabra"- The Steven Soderbergh-directed film for HBO focuses on the last ten years of the life of flamboyant pianist Liberace (Michael Douglas) and the secret affair he had with a younger man, Scott Thorson (Matt Damon). Thorson, who worked as an animal trainer for movies, was introduced to Liberace and began treating his temporarily blind dog. Liberace took a liking to the handsome younger man and made him his "assistant." The movie chronicles their tumultuous relationship and Liberace's fatal illness.

"Dancing on the Edge"- The BBC television drama focuses on a black jazz band in London in the early 1930s. The band gets a gig at the Imperial Hotel and quickly becomes a success, with the Royal Family even asking the band to play at parties. The band rockets to the top and is offered numerous record deals. But when tragedy strikes, the band's future is uncertain.

"Top of the Lake"- The television miniseries was written by Jane Campion and Gerard Lee, and it marks Campion's first work for TV since she did "An Angel at My Table" in 1990. The series, which was filmed and set in New Zealand, focuses on a detective (Elisabeth Moss) who investigates the disappearance of a pregnant 12-year-old girl. It was shown on the Sundance Channel in the United States, and aired on BBC Two in the UK and UKTV in Australia and New Zealand.

"The White Queen"- The 10-part British television series aired on the BBC in June and on Starz in the U.S. in August. It is based on Philippa Gregory's historical novel series "The Cousin's War," which chronicles the War of the Roses and the women caught up in the conflict for the throne of England. The story focuses on three women during the war between the House of York and the House of Lancaster. Elizabeth Woodville is the central character in the first book and the TV series.

Prediction: While "American Horror Story: Coven" is incredibly compelling-- in large part because of the performances of Jessica Lange and Kathy Bates-- the Golden Globe will most likely go to "Behind the Candelabra." The HBO movie has received heaps of critical acclaim due to the stellar performances of Michael Douglas and Matt Damon, and also competed for the Palme d'Or. Steven Soderbergh's directing also helped catapult the TV movie to major motion picture popularity.
