Caitlyn Jenner may have made waves for finally revealing her true self, but before she came Lily Elbe, one of the first people in the world who underwent a gender confirmation surgery. In a new film by "The King's Speech" and "Les Miserables" director Tom Hooper, comes "The Danish Girl" a biopic about Elbe based on the book by the same name by David Ebershoff.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, "The Danish Girl" stars Eddie Redmayne as Einar Magnus Andreas Wegener and Alicia Vikander as his wife Gerda. The film focuses on the love story between the two artists as Wegener makes his journey transform into the mysterious Lily Elba.

The trailer begins with Redmayne's and Vikander's characters in the early days of their marriage, revealing how he first began dressing as a woman -- for Gerda's paintings. Ultimately, he discovers that the body he is in is not his, and later tells his wife, "I believe that I am a woman."

The trailer also shows Lili undergoes an operation and declaring the need to change as he said, "This is not my body, I have to let it go." However, in the end of the clip is a voice-over, where Lili proclaimed her love for her wife, saying, "I love you because you're the only person who made sense of me, who made me possible."

While the trailer gave way to a lot of waterworks, The Guardian reported that transgender activists have criticized the choice for Lili's role, believing that a person who has actually gone through with a gender reassignment operation would make more sense. However, Hooper defended his choice.

The director said, "Eddie was really the person I wanted to make the film with, and I was very passionate about that. I was a great believer in him as an actor. I think also there's a certain gender fluidity that I sensed in him, that I found intriguing and it led me to think he might be a really interesting person to cast in this role."

In an interview with Out Magazine, Redmayne also opened up about the role, saying, "I felt like, I'm being given this extraordinary experience of being able to play this woman, but with that comes this responsibility of not only educating myself but hopefully using that to educate [an audience]."

He added, "Gosh, it's delicate. And complicated."

"The Danish Girl" will premiere in theaters on November 27.
