Telltale's The Walking Dead game series has been of one of the biggest hits of 2012, and the second season of content has officially begun with the release of Episode One of Season two of the game. But is the beginning of the new season on par with the first season?
Metro points out that as the first episode of a new five-episode arc, "All That Remains" features lots of setup for future events, and the playable character Clementine has yet to establish herself through the new content.
"We hate to say it but even Clemy seems inconsistent: vulnerable and helpless one minute and a spunky survivor with more street smarts than her elders the next (her blackmailing of the other survivors enters particularly dark territory when it's a pregnant woman she's threatening). It's also not yet obvious that any of your choices from the previous season are having any real impact on this new one," wrote Metro.
When players are not interacting with other characters, the game can be very exciting when Clementine is in danger, according to Mashable.
"Of course, this game isn't all talk. Clementine manages to get herself in some very harrowing situations in this nasty world. You'll have to be very quick reflexed to avoid harm, as every single bad situation comes out of nowhere. These gameplay moments aren't like quicktime events entirely, as they now rely on aiming your curser at enemies to launch a perfectly-timed attack, but there are still times you'll have to swipe or tap a button to execute an option," Mashable reported.
Overall, if players are already invested in Telltale's The Walking Dead, they may as well play through All That Remains, but the final verdict for the content must wait until the whole season is playable, according to IGN:
"Clementine's character development highlights the fact that she was a secondary character, someone to look out for, in the first season. Here, she's come into her own, learned from the Lee Everett we knew more about, and is stronger than she's ever been - both as a person and a story's subject. For now, Season 2's meandering main story is too vague to be exciting right now, but if the writing so far is indicative of how Telltale will handle the remaining episodes, The Walking Dead could bottle lightning twice."
