US National Hispanic Heritage Month 2015: Top 5 Events to Mark on Your Calendar

The Hispanic Heritage Month 2015 is set to be celebrated starting Sept 15 until Oct 15 to recognize the contributions of the Latino Americans and Hispanics to the United States and also highlight on their culture.

With a few weeks left before the celebration, here is a lineup of activities suggested for the public to celebrate this event:

1. Proclamation signing and multi-agency observance of the Hispanic Heritage Month 2015

This will happen on Sept 10 at the Rotunda of the Pennsylvania State Capitol in Harrisburg from 10 am to 11:45 am, according to PR News Wire.

Celebrating the theme "Hispanic Americans: Energizing Our Nation's Diversity," the event will be graced by Pennsylvania Secretary of Education Pedro A. Rivera.

2. San Jacinto College opening celebration

According to Chron, there will be a parade and an opening ceremony at the historical marker at the Central Campus. The South Campus, on the other hand, will kick off the celebration with food, music and arts events while the North Campus will have the Grito Fest.

In defining "Grito," Chron said this is "a celebratory ululation that evolved from a battle cry during the war for independence that has roots even further in history, reaching back to the native tribes in Mexico."

San Jacinto College vice chancellor Allatia Harris said that the celebration teaches people to be more united.

"The more we learn about our shared backgrounds and the forces that shape our Texas culture, the more it brings us together. When we learn about our vibrant cultures by enjoying music, dance and food together, it's fun," Harris explained.

3. Latino American Film Fiesta

The Irving Public Library, as per The Dallas Morning News, will have a film and program series to celebrate Latino culture. It will begin on Sept 12 at 2 pm at the East Branch Library, 440 S. Nursery Road. Among the films to be screened in the event are the dance performance by Amor a Nuestra Cultura Ballet Folklorico, the biographical film of Tejano music sensation Selena Quintanilla and a Tejano tribute of the South Texan culture.

4. The Council Bluffs Public Library Screenings

The library will start its screenings of the "The New Latinos (1945-1965)" and "Prejudice and Pride (1965-1980)" and "Latino Americans" starting 6:30 pm on Sept 14 and Sept 17 at the Meeting Room B of the library, 400 Willow Avenue.

5. Sedalia Hispanic Festival 5 Que! Run

This event will kick off the month-long celebration and will begin at 9 am People could join in the run for a registration fee of $20.
