You’ve heard of meth lab explosions, but you probably haven’t heard of marijuana lab explosions. Marijuana is a naturally grown plant. There is no chemical cooking process to produce the finest bud. However, a new trend that’s slowly gaining acceptance and popularity is now tarnishing marijuana’s pure soul.
The production of marijuana wax, an extremely high potency THC extract, is highly dangerous, and two Brooklyn teenagers learned the hard way when their lab exploded yesterday morning. Gabrielle Katanov, 17, and her 19-year-old boyfriend, Anthony Gambale, suffered severe burns in the explosion and now face charges for reckless endangerment, criminal use of drug paraphernalia and marijuana possession, Gothamist reports.
The two teenagers suffered second and third degree burns after soaking a thirty-gallon tub of marijuana with butane and sparking a cigarette. The explosion took place in a rented garage apartment in Marine Park, Brooklyn. They are both still in critical condition.
“It was a loud explosion,” said Battalion Chief Steven Treco. “Major burns to a major portion of their bodies.”
As we change the way we consume marijuana in search of a stronger product and more intense high, the formula behind its production or growth has taken away from the drug’s soul. Marijuana is meant to be natural and pure. Let’s not tarnish its name with garage explosions.
