Snapchat is tricky. In theory, you send your friends a photo or video with a viewing time limit. Once that time expires, the photo or video is deleted, never to be seen again by either party. But here’s the catch. Everything is saved. Somewhere deep in the Snapchat database, that photo exists. Nothing is ever truly deleted, and sometimes it can come back to haunt you.

The app is notorious for naked selfies. Instead of sending a file via text or email, which can later be saved and redistributed, it disappears after a brief allotted amount of time, so one mother deemed it the perfect forum to send naked pictures of herself and her 14-year-old daughter. And guess what? The photo went public.

The mother, 50, posed with her daughter in a hot tub, “covering their nipples” while her 13-year-old daughter snapped the photo. The picture circulated around multiple high schools in the area and eventually led to the mother’s arrest.

In this case, one of the recipients took a screenshot of the photo, which sends an alert to the sender informing them that the they have saved the photo. But that function doesn’t prevent anything. If someone snaps a photo, they have free rein to with it what they please, even if you’re aware they took the screenshot and politely ask them to delete it. It’s a dangerous game.

“The issue here is the fact the daughter was 14 and the mother was clearly present and involved when the photo was taken,” said St. Charles County Prosecutor Tim Lohmar. “It certainly appeared that the picture was posed and it certainly had some sexual overtones."

All names of the parties involved have been withheld in order to protect the identity of the children, however, the mother has spoken out against the allegations. “I was aware the photo was taken, and I told her at that second, please delete that photo,” she said. “I wasn’t posing I was getting out of the tub.”

It’s unclear who sent the photo out, but the mother is facing up to a year in prison for misdemeanor charges of endangering the welfare of a minor. Don’t be fooled. Snapchat is a dangerous game.
