Former All-Star center Chris Kaman voiced his frustration on his current role with the Los Angeles Lakers, prompting basketball followers to speculate trade scenarios involving the disgruntled big man.
Kaman, who signed a one-year, $3.2 million deal with the Lakers, said he's not happy with his situation under Lakers head coach Mike D'Antoni, adding he never expected to play a minimal role when he signed with the Lakers last summer.
The veteran center was one of the Lakers' solid contributors off the bench, averaging 8.3 points and 5.1 rebounds in 16.8 minutes per game. However, the veteran big man wanted to log in more minutes on the floor alongside power forward/center Pau Gasol.
In an interview with Ramona Shelburne of ESPN Los Angeles, Kaman talked about his struggle in cracking into D'Antoni's rotation regularly. The center admitted his disappointment, though he has no plans to demand a trade.
"It's absolutely not what I was looking for," Kaman said. "It's not really in my control. I just try to keep working hard and be ready if the time comes. And if it doesn't, then it just wasn't meant to be."
Hampered with back problems, Kaman persevered hard to get back to action as quickly as possible. Unfortunately for him, seldom-used big man Robert Sacre has steadily established himself as part of D'Antoni's regular rotation, playing at least 10 minutes per game over the last 10 games.
Kaman said he will try to stay patient and give his coach a little more time to figure out where he really fits.
"I haven't," Kaman said, when asked if he'd heard from the Lakers or anyone else about whether he'd be moved. "The conversations I've had have been, 'Let's stick with it. Let's play it out a little more. Let's see where things go.' So I just try to be ready and be positive. I'm not going to let it take away from me having fun and being a good person. I just do the best I can with what I've got," Kaman added.
Trade Kaman for Point Guard
If given solid playing time, Kaman could prove to be a very productive big man, the kind of player that makes an impact on both ends of the floor. According to several hoops analysts, the Lakers would be wise to trade the disgruntled center right away before the situation gets out of control.
A young, up-and-coming point guard would be nice compensation for the Lakers since they are looking for some help in their backcourt. Chicago Bulls point guard Marquis Teague or Toronto Raptors Kyle Lowry could be a nice addition for the Lakers, if these trades push through.
There are a number of teams that might be interested in Kaman. The New Orleans Pelicans, Chicago Bulls, Toronto Raptors and Houston Rockets are reportedly looking for a backup center, and Kaman could fill the role perfectly.
