ESPN said the former NBA star died at a hospital located in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

His name first made waves in the league in 1975 when he "became the first player ever drafted directly from high school to the NBA," according to WFMZ.

Also known as "Chocolate Thunder," Dawkins completed 15 seasons with the NBA and played for teams like the Philadelphia 76ers and the New Jersey Nets.

He was also famous for his powerful dunks. In 1979, he destroyed two backboards in two different games.

In a statement, Philadelphia 76ers CEO, Scott O'Neil said that the team is really said with the passing of the "absolute legend."

"We've lost a dear friend and an iconic figure, both on and off the court. We remember fondly not only his thunderous dunks, but more importantly his powerful presence and personality. Simply put, Darryl Dawkins was beloved-by his family, friends, former teammates and his fans all over the globe," O'Neil said.

He added that the "endearing charm, infectious smile and unparalleled sense of humor" of Dawkins will never be forgotten and will always be missed.

"'Chocolate Thunder' will always have a special place in our hearts. His family is in our thoughts and prayers," added the 76ers CEO.

The Guardian reported on the magic Dawkins worked with his dunks, saying that the basketball player claimed that he was from some planet called "Lovetron" and that his nickname was given to him by musician Stevie Wonder.

"The nicknames forever changed depending on how he felt. And when he dunked basketballs he did so with a ferociousness few had ever seen," added the same report.

He was not only fond of making names for himself but also for the dunks he made.

He named his first one as the "The Chocolate-Thunder-Flying, Robinzine-Crying, Teeth-Shaking, Glass-Breaking, Rump-Roasting, Bun-Toasting, Wham-Bam, Glass-Breaker-I-Am-Jam," according to The Guardian.
