AMC's "Fear the Walking Dead" premiered on Sunday, with a record-setting number for a premiere of 10.1 million viewers. The 90-minute episode of the much-awaited "The Walking Dead" companion series was noted by USA Today to also be one of the top cable series for young adults, attracting 6.3 million in the 18-49 demographic.
Originally slated for six episodes, the new series has already been renewed for a 15-episode second season, moving ahead of the "Breaking Bad" spinoff, "Better Call Saul."
While the first episode focused on establishing a handful of new characters, more action can be expected in the second episode, titled "So Close, Yet So Far," as listed by TV Guide.
However, the International Business Times suggested that the main characters will still be confused as they are in the pilot episode, albeit they are coming to terms about the -- spoiler alert! -- existence of zombies.
The second episode is reported to focus on dealing the logistics of "infected" persons' encounters, with the help of Frank Dillane's Nick, although his apparent addiction proves to be a struggle in escaping zombies.
While the first episode focuses on the dark realization of the existence of the undead, episode 2 is expected to portray growing civil unrest and a lot of disarray.
There's not a lot of zombies on "Fear" yet, but the New Zealand Herald noted that among the most enjoyable moments in the series involved a normal, civilized society that was long ago let go by TWD -- things like teens falling in love, a sister lovingly feeding her brother and even teacher-student interactions.
There's very little of normal human interaction in TWD, and seeing these kinds of relationships on the companion series is somehow a breath of fresh air as far as Zombie apocalypse stories are concerned.
However, there's one thing that's sure about the main character Cliff Curtis's Travis Manawa -- he is not Rick Grimes. Although with five more episodes this season and fifteen the next, there is more than enough time for his character to develop into a stronger person, maybe even in the character development stylings of Heisenberg from "Breaking Bad."
"Fear the Walking Dead" numbers are high, but at this point, it's still no match to the original show's ratings record. Do you think "Fear the Walking Dead" can match up to its original Zombie drama, or are these ratings going to be as high as they could go?
"Fear the Walking Dead" airs on Sundays at 9PM on AMC. Its parent drama, "The Walking Dead," will return for its sixth season on October 11.
