Marcos Maidana scored a scintillating unanimous decision win over Adrien Broner in their World Boxing Association welterweight title showdown on Saturday—a win that could line him up in big-money fights next year.
After scoring the dominating victory on Saturday in Texas, Maidana emerged as one of the possible opponents of Floyd Mayweather Jr. in one of the undefeated American's fights next year.
Although Mayweather will likely face former 140-pound champion Amir Khan in his next bout in May, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer said that the Mayweather-Maidana showdown could eventually happen.
"I think that's definitely a fight that eventually could happen. I think it could be an exciting fight," Schaefer told Boxingscene. "Broner is a very slick boxer, one of the best boxers in the sport. Marcos Maidana was not intimidated by skills one bit and was just not going to be denied."
Schaefer added that while nothing is set in stone as of now, Maidana's performance against Broner, who is a good friend of Mayweather, was enough to prove that he is worthy of a shot against Mayweather, who is still unscathed in 45 professional fights.
"I wouldn't say that because of one fight that you have suddenly - I mean, he definitely is a name which will be in the mix. We'll have to see. I'll talk to Floyd and his team. But this was an amazing performance against a very game Adrien Broner, who didn't give up even though he was hurt early on. It just shows you, Marcos Maidana is special. We all want to see the guy," Schaefer said.
Aside from Khan and Maidana, Mayweather is also being linked anew to former pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao, who recently said that he is planning to meet with the Grand Rapids native in his upcoming U.S. trip.
When pressed to comment on the possible blockbuster showdown between Mayweather and Pacquiao, Schaefer confidently said that the super fight will not happen because of Pacquiao's allegiance with Top Rank chief Bob Arum.
"Manny Pacquiao for Floyd Mayweather at this point is an opponent," Schaefer told Boxingscene. "I'm not going to talk about that because it's not going to happen. I have no interest to deal with or talk about Bob Arum."
