Terminating the birthright citizenship policy is one of the debates currently taking center stage at the U.S. 2016 presidential race.

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump raised the issue as a part of his drastic immigration plan. Trump advocates scrapping automatic citizenship to the U.S.-born children of illegal immigrants, Fox News reported. Ending birthright citizenship would call for a radical revision of the Fourteenth Amendment of the Constitution enacted in 1868.

Repealing the amendment's citizenship clause requires the votes of two-thirds of both houses of Congress and support from three-fourths of the nation's state legislatures. Republicans in Congress have tried - and failed - to pass bills centered on birthright citizenship since 2011, but some conservatives believe that "the granting of citizenship in such cases could be changed without amending the Constitution," Fox News noted.

Trump's stance on birthright citizenship was supported by his fellow Republican rival, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker.

"To me it's about enforcing the laws in this country. And I've been very clear, I think you enforce the laws, and I think it's important to send a message that we're going to enforce the laws, no matter how people come here we're going to enforce the laws," Walker said, as quoted by NBC News.

As quoted by the news outlet, a Walker spokeswoman added, "We have to enforce the laws, keep people from coming here, enforce E-Verify to stop the jobs magnet, and by addressing the root problems we will end the birthright citizenship problem."

Echoing his statement in June announcing his presidential candidacy, Trump said that if he gets elected, he would build a wall along the southern U.S. border and have Mexico pay the cost.

"The cost of building a permanent border wall pales mightily in comparison to what American taxpayers spend every single year on dealing with the fallout of illegal immigration on their communities, schools and unemployment offices. Mexico must pay for the wall," Trump said on his website, as quoted by Fox News.

Trump insisted that Mexico will pay for building the wall, which includes a fee increase on all temporary visas issued to Mexican chief executives and diplomats, as well as in ports of entry to the U.S. from Mexico, the news outlet added.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said that Trump lacks of political experience, Fox News Latino reported. However, Christie admitted that he is open to Trump's stance on birthright citizenship.

"I think all this stuff needs to be re-examined in light of the current circumstances. (Birthright citizenship) may have made sense at some point in our history, but right now, we need to re-look at all that," Christie said in Laura Ingraham's conservative talk show on Aug. 12, as quoted by Fox News Latino.
