Star Wars fans are in for a treat, as the new stand-alone story series "Rogue One" begins filming in London with Lucasfilm officially revealing the members of the cast and crew by sharing some awesome photos.

According to the Star Wars website, the studio revealed on Saturday that the principal photography for the movie has begun under the direction of Godzilla helmer Gareth Edwards and produced by Kathleen Kennedy.

The movie's announcement, which is set to hit theaters by December 16, 2016, comes during Disney's D23 Expo where the filmmakers revealed a first-look on the main cast led by lone female star Felicity Jones.

According to HitFix, the film maintained the "gritty, 'lived-in' aesthetic" of the original trilogy that revolves around the period between the "Star Wars: A New Hope" setting and the departure of the previous saga flicks.

A press release from Kennedy indicates that the stand-alone movie would have the same, familiar elements of the Star Wars universe but explores new territory.

"It goes into new territory, exploring the galactic struggle from a ground-war perspective while maintaining that essential Star Wars feel that fans have come to know," she explained and lauded the director of the film for his skills.

"Gareth is such an innovative director and I'm so excited to be working with him and the extraordinary ensemble cast he's selected for 'Rogue One,'" she added.

HitFix also noticed how the characters of the film seem to be 100 percent human and is led by the lone woman in the gang.

"The cast currently appears 100% human...unless there's a Bothan under that mask in the back? Also, whatever affliction killed off most of the women in a galaxy far, far away is still ravaging the species as Felicity Jones is the lone lady in this gang," the report read.

Joining Jones are award-winning actor Diego Luna, "Bloodline" star Ben Mendelsohn, Hong Kong action star Donnie Yen, "Let the Bullets Fly" actor-director and producer Jiang Wen, Academy-awardee Forest Whitaker, "Casino Royale" antagonist Mads Mikkelsen, "Con Man" series actor Alan Tudyk, and "Nightcrawler" star Riz Ahmed.

Meanwhile, people behind the camera include executive producers Simon Emanuel, John Knoll, Jason McGatlin and Allison Shearmur, who had a hand at the success of "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire."

The film is co-produced by Kiri Hart and John Swartz of the "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," and would be given a more realistic feel with Greig Fraser as the director of photography and Neil Corbould as the special effects supervisor.
