Chicago Blackhawks right wing Patrick Kane is currently being investigated for a sexual assault in Hamburg, New York.
ESPN said the incident happened last weekend with the woman, who accused Kane of rape, seeking medical help after what happened.
Chicago Tribune reported that Kane had evolved from being a "bad boy" figure to one of the stars of the team.
The league said that they have knowledge of the ongoing investigation on the incident.
"We are aware of a police investigation and are following developments," said NHL vice president for communications Frank Brown.
The team, on the other hand, said they are also aware of the matter. "We are in the process of gathering information. It would be inappropriate to comment further at this time," the team said in a statement.
Buffalo News earlier reported said that a local police agency has been tapped to help in the investigation of the case.
"The agency was told that Roseanne Johnson, chief of the Erie County District Attorney's Special Victims Bureau, is the prosecutor assigned to the case," added Buffalo News.
The investigation, however, has not been confirmed by the authorities
"We can neither confirm nor deny the existence or nonexistence of a criminal investigation until such a time as a person is charged with a crime," Hamburg police chief Gregory G. Wickett told Buffalo News.
The Tribune added that police officers went inside Kane's home in Hamburg on Sunday and took photos of the place.
ESPN clarified that the NHL player has not been charged in line with the allegations made against him.
According to WKBW, the incident involving Kane may have started in an Evans bar.
It repprted that a manager at Mickey Rat's Beach Club confirmed that the police called their business office to check if the NFL star was there last Satruday.
Proving his talent in the sport, Kane lead the Blackhawks in three Stanley Cup victories in 2010, 2013 and last year. A brush with the law is also not new for Kane as he was reportedly arrested in August 2009 for assaulting a cab driver.
During the course of the trial, WKBW said Kane "pleaded guilty to minor charges of disorderly conduct and was granted a conditional discharge."
Photos of him passing out during Cinco de Mayo weekend in 2012 also made rounds in social media.
He admits that he still need a lot of growing up to do but has expressed his intention to be better.
