One of the biggest online security firms in the world is reporting that the release of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One has caused a huge spike in hacking attempts, not just on the new consoles, but on many different platforms.

A Kaspersky Lab representative spoke to Consumer Affairs and claimed that on average 34,000 attacks are carried out by hackers. In addition, 4.6 million pieces of gaming focused malware have been discovered that specifically targets video game consoles. In Kaspersky Lab's breakdown of Europe, Spain was found to have the most cyber attacks with 138,786. Poland was second in attacks with 127,509, and Italy was third on the list with 75,080.

Some may assume these cyber attacks are attempts to find credit card numbers and other financial information on the consoles, but Kaspersky is reporting that the main target for hackers is usernames and passwords. This is so hackers can attack video game companies themselves rather than individuals.

David Emm, senior security researcher at Kaspersky Lab, said the rise in attacks was spurred by the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One launches:

"We've just seen two of the biggest console launches ever, with the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One...That means there will be more gamers for criminals to target, especially as the Sony and Microsoft machines increasingly use the Internet for a fuller gaming experience. And don't forget the PC, still the most popular gaming platform and cyber crooks' favorite target."

Hackers have various tricks for stealing a user's information. Some hackers offered gullible gamers a fake Minecraft mod that would give them special abilities like the ability to ban other users. However, the mod only stole the user's name and password. In anticipation of the launch of Grand Theft Auto 5, several hackers also made fake websites offering gamers access to the game's beta or the game itself for free, but it was all a ruse to steal a player's information.

Emm warned gamers that they should expect more cyber attacks as consoles become more prominent in the mainstream. "As computer games continue to become an increasingly prominent and important part of our lives, and our culture, expect malicious actors to up the sophistication and the volume of their attacks on gamers...If people want to enjoy their new toys this Christmas, they have to be careful, as it's clear they are facing a greater threat than ever," Emm added.
