Donald Trump has filed a $10 million lawsuit against celebrity chef José Andrés after a contract breach.

Earlier in July, the Spanish-American chef backed out of his plans to open a flagship restaurant at one of Trump's luxury hotels based in Washington, D.C., Daily Mail wrote. The cancellation was due to the Republican presidential candidate's offensive remarks against Mexican immigrants in his candidacy speech in June.

Last month, hundreds signed in a Change.org petition made by Erick Sanchez calling Andrés to back out of his deal with Trump, Washington Post reported. The $200 million hotel, which is set to open to the public in 2016, was a redevelopment of the historic Old Post Office Pavilion on Pennsylvania Avenue NW.

The lawsuit, which was filed in D.C. federal district court, indicated that Andrés broke his lease and that he owes Trump $10 million in damages that constitutes lost rent and the cost of finding a new tenant, a separate report from Washington Post noted. The legal action goes against Andrés' ThinkFoodGroup and an affiliate company, Topo Atrio LLC.

The 46-year-old renowned chef, who's known for popularizing small dishes known as tapas in the U.S., previously said that Trump's remarks "make it impossible" for him and his company to push through with the deal, Daily Mail added. Andrés also said that half of his team and customers are of Hispanic descent.

"As a proud Spanish immigrant and recently naturalized American citizen myself, I believe that every human being deserves respect, regardless of immigration status," he said, as quoted by the news outlet.

According to Trump's lawyers, the business magnate's statements on immigration shouldn't have shocked Andrés.

"Mr. Andrés' offense is curious in light of the fact that Mr. Trump's publicly shared views on immigration have remained consistent for many years, and Mr. Trump's willingness to frankly share his opinions is widely known," the lawsuit said, as reported by Washington Post.

Donald Trump Jr., Trump's son and a Trump Organization executive, said that they are implementing exclusivity provisions that will hinder Andrés from opening a competing restaurant located anywhere in the D.C. area, Daily Mail noted.

In response to Trump's camp, ThinkFoodGroup said that the presidential hopeful's remarks "constituted a breach which the landlord, Trump Old Post Office LLC, refused to remedy," the news outlet added. ThinkFoodGroup said that they intend to run a business that honor different cultures around the world.

"The landlord allowed Mr. Trump to saddle us with the burden of his inflammatory statements, such that operating a high-end Spanish restaurant is no longer viable for us at this location," ThinkFoodGroup's statement continued, as quoted by Washington Post.
