"Dr Who" meets "Game of Thrones" next season with the addition of Maisie Williams in the cast. Her entry sparked a lot of speculation from Whovians wondering what her role will be in the hit series.
Showrunner Steven Moffat, however, took it upon himself to shut down most of the rumors about the show and Williams' role during the Television Critics Association press tour on Friday. The Los Angeles Times reported that Moffatt was joined via satellite by "Dr Who" stars Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman, and when asked about the character Williams is playing, Moffat gave a cautious response.
He said, "I can't really tell you. I think once you see what she's up to in the show you'll appreciate what a clever idea of Brian Minchin's - that was [my co-exec] who thought of Maisie for this part."
He also assured fans that they're not picking her up for nothing, adding, "It's a significant role. We're not throwing her away. We're not just getting star value and doing nothing with it. It's a great part, and she's terrific in it. But, I would say, it will develop in unexpected ways."
However, he did address one specific rumor. He told the crowd at the press tour: "One thing I think is worth saying because it keeps coming up as an issue: She is not playing a returning character. She's a brand new character. She is not someone from the Doctor's past... Unless I'm lying. Aye."
Everyone knows that the Doctor lies, and the saying could also apply to the producers.
The Daily Mail noted that in the next season of the show, the Doctor will have a "new hunger for adventure," and from the trailer, it seems that he's going to see that with the 18-year-old "Game of Thrones" favorite.
The next season will have Peter Capaldi reprise his role as Time Lord, and he has already told fans what they can expect from him. He teased a possible spoiler earlier in the week, though, in an event sponsored by Apple. He said, "my Roman alter-ego [...] he may appear again... He will certainly be invoked."
What do you think? What will William's character be and how will it affect Capaldi's Doctor? Will they be allies or opponents?
"Dr Who" returns to the small screen on September 19 on BBC America. Aside from Capaldi, the show stars Jenna Coleman and Michelle Gomez who were also present at the recently concluded Comic-Con panel.
