Philadelphia Phillies veteran closer Jonathan Papelbon has reportedly drawn interest from several teams, including the Boston Red Sox's bitterest division rival the New York Yankees, a source close to situation reported on Sunday.
According to CSN Philly's Jim Salisbury, the Phillies are looking to get rid of Papelbon and his lucrative deal. Papelbon, who signed a four-year, $50 million deal with the Phillies in 2011, went 5-1 with 2.92 ERA and 29 saves last season. But with the Phillies looking to move in a different direction, Papelbon and the rest of the pitching squad have become susceptible to trades.
The Phillies are "selling the crap out of [Papelbon]. The Phillies are willing to pay some of Papelbon's salary to facilitate a trade," wrote Salisbury.
Salisbury added that the Phillies even tried to offer Papelbon to the Cleveland Indians, but the ballclub was not interested in acquiring the five-time All-Star relief pitcher.
"One source told Salisbury that the Phillies approached the Indians and offered to pay part of Papelbon's salary, but the Indians weren't interested," MLB Trade Rumors reported on Sunday.
Yankees Eyeing Former Rival Closer
The Yankees are still searching for a successor for recently retired closer Mariano Rivera. According to a league insider, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman is reportedly looking to make a deal for Papelbon, who has two years left in his current deal.
"He fits pretty well there. There's two years left on the deal," a scout said via Real GM.
Despite already having David Robertson as their closer, the Yankees remain interested in adding a closer of Papelbon's caliber to further boost their bullpen rotation next year.
"Not sure the Yankees are completely sold on David Robertson being their closer. He's best suited as a setup man, but Papelbon would get hyped up in New York, replacing Mariano Rivera. I think it would be a positive thing and a good fit and I would think it's been explored already," the source added.
If the Yankees manage to land Papelbon via trade, the closer will become the second former Red Sox player after Jacoby Ellsbury to team up with their former team's archrival. These movements are sure to add more heat to the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry.
