Warner Bros. is ready to launch its own DC Movie Universe, starting with next year's "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" and "Suicide Squad," with standalone films slated every year for the next five years.
Casting is already underway for six of the seven members of the Justice League: Henry Cavill as Superman, Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as the Flash, and Ray Fisher as Cyborg. This leaves another integral member out: Green Lantern.
The role that Ryan Reynolds played in 2011 is looking for a reboot, and casting rumors included Chris Pine and Tyrese Gibson as frontrunners. Gibson has also been adding fuel to the fire, as put by Collider, with the actor's not-so-subtle Instagram posts. The actor also confirmed that he's met with the studio regarding the project.
Gibson said, "I've already had a couple of meetings at Warner Bros., so we'll see what happens. I do believe that there needs to be more black superheroes out there, but that's not even my motivation."
He continued "I think I would be the best Green Lantern and based on my fans and supporters that spent around $6 billion in box office receipts, I feel like there's a fanbase of fans out there waiting to see me put on this green suit and do my thing."
The film will officially be called "Green Lantern Corps," reported Screen Rant. Even though Warner Bros. will have to cast the part pretty soon, the studio doesn't seem to be in a hurry to fill it up, as the character will not be involved in any of the films until 2017's "Justice League."
Of course, Gibson's sit-down with the studio doesn't automatically grant him the role, and there have been questions about whether or not he can pull it off. Screen Rant noted that even though he is no stranger to big franchise films (he had roles in "Transformers" and "Fast & Furious") he usually served as a comic relief, not a hero per se.
Pine and Gibson are the main bets for Green Lantern, however, considering that it will be called "Green Lantern Corps," there is a possibility that either actor could share the top bill with each other, and with a few others as well. In a fan-made photo that Gibson shared, he was made to look more like Jon Stewart while Pine was made as Gal Jordan. Movie Pilot suggested that Jake Gyllenhaal could be Guy Gardner. He also becomes the leader of the Red Lantern Crops later on.
Who do you think will be in the 2020 film?
