Peter Berg, the creator of "Friday Night Lights," is under fire for expressing his opinion after the 2015 ESPY Awards recognized Caitlyn Jenner's courage for coming out.
According to E! News, it all started when Berg posted a meme over Instagram showing a photo of the former Bruce Jenner during his transition adjacent to an image of Army veteran Gregory Gadson with artificial legs.
"One man traded 2 legs for the freedom of the other to trade 2 balls for 2 boobs Guess which Man made the cover of Vanity Fair, was praised for his courage by President Obama and is to be honored with the 'Arthur Ashe Courage Award' by ESPN?" the meme read, with Berg adding a one-word caption: "Yup."
According to the Washington Post, the meme in question was one from the Facebook page of the Main Stream Media Sponsor Boycotts.
The "Lone Survivor" director was referring to Wednesday night's ESPY awards.
This ignited a commotion over the photo sharing platform with one Instagram user expressing his disappointment at the director, saying: "I loved watching 'Friday Night Lights' so much because I was constantly watching people finding the courage to succeed and understand themselves better and most especially watching people who struggle find their place..."
During the controversial awards night, Caitlyn graciously accepted the prestigious Arthur Ashe Courage Award with an emotional speech saying that it "wasn't easy" to keep her emotions at bay, ABC News stated.
"I trained hard. I competed hard. And for that people respected me. But this transition has been harder on me than anything I can imagine," she told the audience during her 10-minute speech.
"I am just great to be in a position where myself and my family have been so supportive of what is happening," she intoned.
She expressed gratitude for having "such wonderful and open-minded children," adding that what matters is that "all of us accepting one another" no matter what the differences may be.
Though many were moved with her tear-jerking speech, there are still those who question ESPN's choice of the courage awardee and agree with Berg, including NBC's Bob Costas.
According to Washington Post, the broadcaster expressed his opinion during "The Dan Patrick Show" on Monday, describing the awarding ceremony as "a crass exploitation play."
"In the broad world of sports, I'm pretty sure they could've found someone - and this is not anything against Caitlyn Jenner - who was much closer, actively involved in sports, who would've been deserving of what that award represents," he added.
