Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has called for the FBI upon receiving a threatening tweet about the escaped Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman.
Sources told ABC News that Trump reached out to FBI's Manhattan Office on Monday. The business magnate has been using Guzman's recent escape from a maximum security prison in Mexico as a way to strengthen his claims about illegal immigration and border security.
"El Chapo and the Mexican drug cartels use the border unimpeded like it was a vacuum cleaner, sucking drugs and death right into the U.S," Trump tweeted.
He added, "The joke around town is that I freed El Chapo from the Mexican prison because the timing was so good w/ my statements on border security."
The tweet from user @ElChap0Guzman, as translated by ABC News from Spanish, reads: "Keep [expletive] around and I'm gonna make you swallow your [expletive] words..." The Twitter account is reportedly managed by Guzman's son, Ivan, The Telegraph noted.
In a statement issued on Monday, Trump said that he is fighting for the future of the U.S. "which is being overrun by criminals," ABC News reported. In his speech on June 16 announcing his presidential candidacy, Trump labeled Mexican immigrants as rapists, criminals, and drug dealers.
According to National Security Commissioner Monte Alejandro Rubido, Guzman, the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, broke out of the Altiplano Federal Prison through a 1.5-kilometer (1 mile) tunnel originating from a small opening in his cell block's shower area, Yahoo! News reported from The Associated Press. CNN reported that at 8:52 PM on Saturday, Guzman was seen via surveillance cameras entering a shower area.
Aside from the widespread manhunt, officials also closed Toluca International Airport, CNN added. Thirty employees from various parts of the Altiplano prison were also taken in by officials for questioning, Yahoo! News noted.
According to a separate report from CNN, it's likely that the Sinaloa cartel spent years infiltrating the Altiplano prison to learn of its architectural plans, which pointed them towards the location of the shower room.
"If he went out that tunnel, it was with an armed escort, most likely a mix of prison guards and his own people, if the past is prologue," said Don Winslow, a drug war expert, the news outlet reported.
As to how Guzman escaped Altiplano's security system, Mexican Interior Minister Miguel ángel Osorio Chong said that it's possible that jail workers assisted in the drug lord's prison break, CNN added. He also announced that he'd fired the prison's director and other prison officials.
