Guillermo del Toro spoke about liberating gender roles in his upcoming film, "Crimson Peak," starring Tom Hiddleston, Mia Wasikowska, and Jessica Chastain.

At the San Diego Comic-Con panel, the filmmaker discussed creating powerful women characters in his movies, which is evident in his other projects such as "Pan's Labyrinth" and "Pacific Rim."

"The whole point for me with the love story is not to make the typical romance where everything ends in marriage and that marriage is the ultimate blessing," del Toro said about "Crimson Peak," as quoted by Time.

He continued, "In the movie, actually, marriage is the gateway to a very painful discovery and horror. At the same time, it's a time when some characters start really falling in love without romantic assumptions. It's a really nice story twist."

"Crimson Peak" is set in 1901 in Buffalo, New York, a time when the battle for women's rights is at its crest, Time reported. Edith, Wasikowska's character, is a woman who wishes to be taken seriously as a writer, refuses to fall in love, but falls in love in an unusual way. Edith moves to her husband's England manor, a decaying home plagued with dark secrets, MTV wrote.

According to the 50-year-old director, the movie will feature Edith as "a more powerful character" as the story progresses, Time noted. Lucille (Chastain) is a character who has "a very different point of view of what it is to be female at that point," the news outlet added.

"She's more 19th century. She's more possessive and subservient and at the same time, darker about love. It's sort of these two points of view not only metaphorically but physically confronting each other," del Toro explained of Chastain's character, as reported by Time.

Hiddleston, who portrays Thomas, revealed that the climax of the film was emotionally draining to shoot.

"It exists at a very intense pitch," the actor explained, as quoted by The Hollywood Reporter. "I personally find the last 45 minutes of this film is headlong and thrilling. There is twist after twist and you don't know where it's going to go."

Chastain, meanwhile, said that she didn't have fun portraying a complicated character such as Lucille. According to the actress, "if you're character isn't having fun, then you're not having fun," MTV noted.

In the trailer, Wasikowska's character was shown as someone who has seen ghosts all her life. Later on in the film, she realizes that the ghosts in the manor are trying to warn her, The Hollywood Reporter wrote.

"Crimson Peak" premieres in theaters on Oct. 16, the news outlet reported. Also starring are Charlie Hunnam and Jim Beaver. Watch the trailer below.
