There's some good news and bad news for Samsung Galaxy Note 2 owners everywhere. Good news? A software update for the popular phablet is currently being rolled out. Bad news? Android 4.2.2 is a long ways off.

As of right now, Samsung is rolling out a stability software patch for the Galaxy Note 2 model GT-N7100. The update carries a build date of May 31, and is not designed to radically overhaul the Android experience on the phone. Instead, the update brings a few security fixes and addresses some other issues such as battery drain. The update is reportedly rolling out across a number of European countries OTA and can be grabbed via Samsung KIES. The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 will still be running Android 4.1.2 after installing the patch.

Sadly, the stability update is not the software most Galaxy Note 2 owners are waiting for. Android 4.2.2 was widely expected to land on the phablet sometime in June - until a delay was reported. Apparently Samsung is having issues with the new TouchWiz user interface based off the Galaxy S4, and a SamMobile report states that Android 4.2.2 for the Galaxy Note 2 will not release until Q3 2013. The third quarter starts in July and runs until the end of September.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 is also rumored to get Android 4.2.2 at the same time as the Galaxy Note 2.

It's not surprising that Samsung is trying to cram some Galaxy S4 features onto its older handsets, as the South Korean electronics manufacturer has done the same in the past. The Samsung Galaxy S3, Galaxy S2, and the Galaxy Note all received Galaxy Note 2 features such as Multi-Window.
