The Nintendo Wii U has struggled throughout 2013. Fans complained about a lack of blockbuster titles for the console, and the Wii U was also overshadowed by the 3DS. However, the console looks to be having a late surge that could find the Wii U building momentum for 2014 to regain its place in the next-gen console war.
As Gamespot reported, Nintendo has released sales figures for November for both the Wii U and 3DS that reveal that its console sales rose an amazing 340 percent between October and November. This is most likely due to the price cut to the console that brought it to $299, which is $100 cheaper than the PlayStation 4 and $200 cheaper than the Xbox One. Another key factor is the release of many blockbuster titles for the Wii U such as The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD and Super Mario 3D World.
Speaking of Super Mario 3D World, Nintendo revealed that the game sold 215,000 physical and digital units during November. While this may not sound like much compared to game such as Call of Duty: Ghosts or Grand Theft Auto 5, Super Mario 3D World has a much smaller user base than those of multiplatform blockbusters. In addition, Super Mario 3D World came out on Nov. 22, meaning the game was only available for eight days before Nintendo obtained there figures.
Nintendo of America marketing executive Scott Moffitt said the company's strong November sales figures were encouraging.
"In looking at these results, two things are indisputable: Our hardware is gaining momentum at the exact right time and our software catalog is stronger than ever," said Moffitt.
Nintendo must be thrilled that the Wii U is surging during the same time that the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One were launched. While the Wii U may not be selling millions of units like the newer consoles, the console is quickly gaining steam. With games such as Super Smash Bros. 4 and a rumored Legend of Zelda game in the works for the console, Nintendo may finally be on track to gain ground on the competition and make the console war a three way dance.
