It's official: Sony's PlayStation 4 is the fastest-selling console ever. According to IGN, a report from DFC Intelligence shows that the PlayStation 4 sold the largest number of video game consoles in history during its worldwide launch.

"Both the Sony PlayStation 4 and Microsoft Xbox One had very successful console launches in November, 2013...With 2.1 million units sold in its initial two weeks, the PlayStation 4 became the largest console launch ever," wrote DFC Intelligence in its report.

DFC Intelligence claims that the PlayStation 4 sold 100,000 more units worldwide than the Xbox One two weeks after each console was launched. The PlayStation 4 managed 2.1 million units sold in the United States and several European countries. The Xbox One had closer to 2 million sales in 13 different countries including the United States, Brazil and Australia.

In comparison, when the Nintendo Wii launched back in November 2006 it sold 1.6 million units in North America and Japan. Going back even further, in March 2000 when the PlayStation 2 launched, the console sold 1.4 million consoles in two weeks in Japan.

Despite the strong numbers, DFC believes that the PlayStation 4 will not be the best-selling console of all time. However, it still may be the best-selling console of the current generation of consoles.

"The initial success of the PlayStation 4 bodes well for its future. The PlayStation 2 and Wii went on to be the best selling console systems ever...DFC Intelligence does not believe that the PlayStation 4 will surpass those systems but reiterates its forecast that the PS4 will be the number one system of this generation," wrote the DFC.

With 2014 rapidly approaching, both Sony and Microsoft (as well as Nintendo, whose Wii U console is a distant third in console sales despite being released months before the Xbox One or PlayStation 4) will try to break out and gain some distance from the other in terms of sales numbers. With neither console available in Japan, that country will be the battleground that determines which console is able to take a firm lead in global popularity in the future.
