Award-winning singer Rihanna takes digital recording by storm, surpassing the 100 million digital single sales mark, and was crowned the recording industry's top digital singles artist.
According to Today Online, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) lauded the 27-year-old singer for accomplishing this historical milestone on Wednesday.
"She has not only surpassed RIAA's one-hundred million mark, but also is the first artist to do so. It's an historic feat and a testament to an extraordinary career," RIAA CEO and Chairman Cary Sherman said in a statement.
The feat, says Today Online, is based on the number of digital single certifications download, as well as on-demand streams all over the United States of America.
According to Sherman, the industry has been giving out gold and platinum awards for note-worthy achievements in the field, noting that the "Umbrella" songstress has reached something no artist has ever done before.
"Gold & Platinum is the industry's premier way to celebrate achievement in the marketplace. We've given awards to artists for nearly 60 years, but it's rare that we have the opportunity to recognize a milestone like the one Rihanna has reached," Sherman explained.
As of July 1, Rihanna holds the highest number of digital sales, followed by Taylor Swift with 88 million, just ahead of Katy Perry's 79 million.
Kanye West and Lady Gaga complete the top five highest digital singles sales with 46.5 million and 39.5 million, respectively.
This was based on data posted in the RIAA's official website.
Meanwhile, updates about Rihanna's upcoming album "R8" has been close to zero.
However, the International Business Times revealed how her fans' hunger for news on the much-awaited album have been satiated once more after short video clips underscored with R8 songs were leaked over Instagram.
According to the report, the IG account @i_am_mitus, which was used to post the snippets, is owned by music producer Mitus who has been working with Rihanna to make the album a reality.
Buzzfeed revealed that the 20-year-old producer worked with the singer to helm the song used in her campaign ads for Dior.
What's more interesting about the post is the fact that Mitus tagged songwriter Alicia Renee, another Rihanna collaborator in the upcoming album.
While the videos only run for a couple of seconds, it is enough to pique more speculations about the release of the album, which apparently have been quite low at RiRi's priority list as she is reportedly focusing more on other things.
Inquisitr noted how the singer is taking a break from the music industry and is beginning to show interest in an entirely different world — fashion.
An insider source said to Grazia Daily UK that the singer is "in the process of launching herself as a serious fashion designer."
