Floyd Mayweather Jr is set to return to the ring on May 3, but his next opponent is still unknown, although previous rumors suggest that it could either be Amir Khan or Manny Pacquiao.
When asked about the possibility of facing Pacquiao in a mega-buck showdown, the flamboyant American said that he is still waiting for the decision of his team about who his next opponent will be, but Mayweather hinted that he is ready to face the Filipino boxing icon.
"I don't know who my opponent may be; if it's Pacquiao, it's Pacquiao," Mayweather said in an interview with Boxingscene.
However, in a separate interview, the Grand Rapids native sounded unconvinced that Pacquiao deserves a shot at his undefeated record, saying that Pacquiao's win against Brandon Rios is not enough.
"You know, like I said before, they were just talking about this guy needs to retire after he got knocked out. Now he comes and gets a win over Brandon Rios and they say, you know what, Pacquiao is back. You're going to get that in the sport of boxing. Like I said before, he's 1 and 2 in his last 3 fights, and my last 45 fights, I'm 45 and 0," Mayweather said in a statement via Fighthype.
The 36-year-old Mayweather also took a jab at Pacquiao's recent pay-per-view numbers, questioning whether or not the public is still interested in watching the Filipino boxer, whose reputation took a blow after losing to Timothy Bradley and being knocked out by Juan Manuel Marquez last year.
"Once again, he's 1 and 2 in his last 3 fights. Let's make this make sense. You look at his pay-per-view numbers. Do your homework! You know, first you got to do your homework. Look at my pay-per-view numbers, look at his pay-per-view numbers, and then you tell me what you come up with," Mayweather said, referring to Pacquiao's fight against Rios that generated just 475,000 buys, which was lower than what was initially expected.
