The New York Knicks are performing below expectations and recent rumors suggested that head coach Mike Woodson is on the hot seat following their dismal start in the 2013-14 NBA season.
The Knicks currently hold a measly 6-15 record and team owner James Dolan, who previously gave a vote of confidence to Woodson, is reportedly losing his patience with reports saying that the Knicks are already looking for a replacement coach.
Former Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy is reportedly being considered to replace Woodson as well as former Knicks star Allan Houston, but ESPN reported that Dolan has strong interest in Chicago Bulls head coach Tom Thibodeau.
"While there's no such thing as a safe bet in the unpredictable world of James Dolan, suggesting he'll try someday to import Tom Thibodeau from Chicago to coach the Knicks is, at the very least, in the right zip code," ESPN noted.
According to the report, Woodson's days in New York are already numbered and that Dolan is just waiting for a big-name coach to be available before ending Woodson's tenure.
"Woodson, even if he survives the crisis at hand, is only going to last until Dolan can find a bigger, splashier name to take over. The belief here is that the Knicks' impresario, given his lack of draft and trade assets to make impactful changes to the talent, ultimately wants a superstar coach as much as he wants to re-sign Melo come July. Which is where Thibodeau comes in," ESPN reported.
Aside from Thibodeau, Dolan is reportedly hoping that Phil Jackson will reconsider his previous decision and end his retirement to coach the Knicks. However, the 11-time champion coach wants full control in personnel decisions, according to the report, "along with more of a win-now roster to even consider coming back to coaching in the cauldron of Gotham. And Dolan isn't giving anyone that much power."
