In the final round of the Travelers Championship, American golfer Bubba Watson was put in a difficult situation when he got stuck behind a tree on the par-4 second hole. However, he showed complete professionalism when he managed to recover from that almost impossible situation.
According to USA Today, a fan tried to give him some advice by shouting that he should "hit a low 4-iron." Being the professional golfer that he is, Watson did not heed the suggestion but instead followed his game plan of pulling a wedges then taking the ball to four feet.
He then told the fan jokingly that what they see is different from what players really encounter during the games. "That's why you're on that side of the ropes," he added.
This shot eventually led to a victory for Watson, who according to BBC, defeated Paul Casey to grab his second Travelers Championship title in Connecticut.
"Casey played great. I hung on and that's what we have to do sometimes to win," Watson told BBC.
In detailing his win, ESPN said that Watson improved his performance 5-1 in going to extra holes and beating Casey despite the latter recovering from a three-stroke deficit in the finals.
"I hung on, and that's what you have to do sometimes to win. It's just about staying calm. That's what you have to do. You just breathe and walk slower, take some deep breaths and focus on the fact that no matter what you still come in second place," Watson said of his attitude during the games.
The same report noted that the game was a close call between the two with Casey trailing closely behind the champion.
For his part, Casey said that he was happy with his effort to reach the finals round and battle it out with Watson.
"There are always ifs and buts and could haves. But the goal was to give myself a chance to win, and I did that," Casey added in the ESON report.
In assessing his performance, Watson reportedly claimed that he was reminded of his 2010 game where he also had the chance to make good shots but was not able to make them.
"It does remind me of 2010, where coming down the stretch I had to hit some good shots and I didn't. I wish it was a lot easier, but a victory is a victory," he explained.
He certainly led the series especially during the first two rounds and finally ending with the championship title. This win, according to him, gets him closer to his aim in the sport and in his career.
"My whole goal in my career was to get 10 wins. I need two more wins," he added.
