Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto was discharged from the hospital on Sunday after undergoing emergency gall bladder surgery.

According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, Peña Nieto left the Central Military Hospital in the middle of the day and said that he is feeling "very good" and thanked the doctors and nurses for taking care of him.

The 48-year-old president was admitted to the hospital on Friday after going through "intense discomfort." After the surgery, which doctors said was the only option, Peña Nieto felt "fully healthy" and "in charge," San Diefo Union-Tribune reported.

In a press conference as he was leaving the hospital, he said that he is having "the normal post-operative discomfort" and had to follow doctors' orders, which includes staying away from intense exercise and lowering his fat intake, Fox News Latino wrote.

"But as for the rest, with the prescription, I'll be able to engage in my regular activities, following orders," Peña Nieto said, as quoted by Fox News Latino.

The illness prompted the president to be absent from a regional summit in Guatemala and came unexpected, the news outlet added. The gall bladder surgery lasted for nearly an hour. Despite the ordeal, Peña Nieto will still perform his duties, including welcoming Spain's King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia in Mexico on Monday for a three-day state visit.

"I hope you will join me at the reception for the Spanish monarchs and all the activities planned for this week, which will not be changed at all, adhering to the schedule as originally expected," the president said, as reported by Fox News Latino.

Peña Nieto's gall bladder surgery was his second operation since taking office in the latter part of 2012, the news outlet added. In July 2013, he went through a surgical procedure for the removal of a benign thyroid nodule.

On Tuesday, the president is scheduled to be present at an event with the Spanish business leaders. A day after that, he will host a luncheon for the Spanish monarchs in the north-central Mexico state Zacatecas. Wednesday's events will conclude the royal visit, Fox News Latino noted. Later this week, Peña Nieto will attend the Pacific Alliance summit in Peru.

Peña Nieto, who took office in December 2012, will end his presidential term on November 2018, The Huffington Post wrote. Just recently, he was criticized over the apparent murder of 43 students in September by a drug gang teaming up with the local police force, The Guardian reported. He was also bombarded with corruption allegations after it was revealed that he, his wife, and his finance minister bought houses from government contractors.
