The U.S. women's soccer team will go to the semifinals of the World Cup after successfully battling it out with China during the quarterfinals on Friday night.
According to Yahoo Sports, midfield Carli Lloyd led the team to victory against their opponents with a 1-0 win. She was helped by defensive midfielder Morgan Brian whose presence allowed the former to roam.
"It was what we needed. I think we're going to be flying next game," Lloyd said to New York Times.
She seems to be determined for their next game against Germany scheduled on Tuesday in Montreal. Germany defeated France in the same location on Friday.
"Overall as a team we wanted to come out fast and strong out of the gate and put them under pressure. That was the first game all tournament when we put them back on their heels. Collectively from the top all the way down it was fantastic and phenomenal team performance," Lloyd added, as per CBC Sports.
Coach Jill Ellis also expressed confidence that his team will perform well in their next game.
"We talked about trying to grow in this tournament, and today was a big, big step for that in terms of just the energy and confidence we had, the way we moved the ball," Ellis said.
She added that the players were truly excited that it showed in their performance. "Their chests are high, and they're ready to go, and I think it's a really good step heading into the semis to have this feeling."
NPR noted that the Americans performed really well, despite not having midfielders Megan Rapinoe and Lauren Holiday to play with them. The two players were slapped with automatic suspensions when they got their yellow cards during the team's game against Colombia.
Their wins for the past games had so much to do with their defense as per the the Wall Street Journal which said, "This is the first time in American women's World Cup history that they'll have gone four consecutive games with a clean sheet, not having conceded a goal since the opening game against Australia."
The Germans will not be an easy opponent for the Americans as the Washington Post noted that the team entered as the No. 1 team in the FIFA rankings. They are also known to be a very proficient team in terms of shootout, showcasing this clearly against their French opponents.
Some of the players to watch out for include Celia Sasic, Melanie Behringer, Simone Laudehr and Dzsenifer Marozsan.
It will be a much anticipated game on Tuesday especially that the U.S. team will be going against a really strong team with high ranking. After the battle, the team with a shot at the championship will be determined.
