Philadelphia Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg resigned on Friday "on his terms," noting that he is not pleased with the team's struggling record.
"In a lot of ways I'm old school, and I'm very much dissatisfied with the record and not pleased at all with that," Sandberg said in an ESPN report.
He added that the team's situation "goes hand in hand with being a manager."
"It's been a difficult thing to swallow, but I have thought about it for some time and we've come to this day. The accumulation of losses was something that I take responsibility for and something that really took a toll on me," he added.
According to ESPN, he will be replaced by third-base coach Pete Mackanin who will function as interim manager.
"This is my third time as an interim manager, and it's not fun. It's not a pleasant thing to do because you have to make sure you keep the guys pointed in the right direction, and at the same time, everybody's feeling a little bit funny," Mackanin told ESPN.
A similar Philly report detailed that Sandberg was not able to push the players to their limits to perform their best.
"Sandberg believes in fundamentals, and he vowed to teach them regularly, which plays just fine in the minor leagues, where the guys have to listen to you, but not as well with big-leaguers," the same report explained.
The site also noted that him leaving the team was going to happen if not now, in the near future. It seemed that Sandberg wanted to leave with the dignity he deserved for serving the team, as per Philly.
His resignation came as the team plans to get the services of Andy MacPhail to lead the team.
"With some leadership roles coming up I think it was important for me not to be in the way with the ways things have gone this year, but to allow the organization to go forward and really get this thing going," Sandberg added in a CBS Sports report.
He also noted that he will never forget the people who gave him encouragement during his three-year tenure in Philadelphia.
"I have met some of the most passionate baseball fans on a daily basis that always gave me encouragement. They love their baseball and that was something I'll never forget," noted Sandberg.
For his part, general manager Ruben Amaro said in the CBS Sports report that Sandberg should not have felt and that he was to blame for the performance of the team.
"We do things as a team and as an organization. We win as an organization and we lose an organization. It's really a team effort. I take my level of responsibility for the things that are happening on the field as well," the general manager added.
